Jon Hamm rose to global fame with his role in the influential series Mad Men. His portrayal of a key character significantly elevated his profile, leading to numerous opportunities in his acting career. Yet, like many artists, he faced challenges and uncertainties before attaining the recognition he enjoys today.

Before securing his breakthrough at the age of 36, Hamm made ends meet by taking on unconventional jobs, including a role in adult film productions. One might wonder why set dressers are necessary in these types of films; Hamm eloquently clarified that the task involves the meticulous arrangement of cameras, props, and ensuring continuity, which requires a level of expertise.

During an interview with The Guardian, Hamm highlighted the seriousness of his job in those films. Despite the unusual nature of his work, he embraced the diligence it demanded. His life took a significant turn after a long day working on a film when he received a call from Jennifer Westfeldt, a casual acquaintance who invited him to audition for her show.

This invitation led him to New York, where he couch-surfed before landing a role in a production called Lipschtick. This opportunity marked a pivotal moment in his journey, helping to establish his professional path and setting the stage for what lies ahead endeavors.

As they collaborated on the show, Hamm and Westfeldt developed a romantic relationship, and he credits her with reviving his career. Westfeldt herself gained recognition with her film Kissing Jessica Stein, released in 2001. During their conversation, Hamm shared that the relief of not having to constantly stress about finances is a new experience for him. He expressed gratitude that, despite the delay, his situation improved significantly.

Reflecting on his journey, Hamm remarked on how unfamiliar it is to be free from financial worry, acknowledging the prolonged period during which it consumed him. Following his success in Mad Men, he expanded his filmography with notable roles in Baby Driver, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Morning Show Show. His earlier experiences as a set dresser ultimately contributed to his achievements in the industry.

Mad Men holds an impressive 8.7/10 rating on IMDB and an outstanding 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series, which ran for seven seasons, can now be streamed on AMC+ in the U.S.
